12-team bracket: first round matchups

A 12-team bracket fills a 16-slot draw, so 4 teams skip round 1. Byes go to the top seeds: seed 1, seed 2, seed 3, seed 4. Round 1 has 4 games:

Game Matchup
1 Seed 8 vs Seed 9
2 Seed 5 vs Seed 12
3 Seed 7 vs Seed 10
4 Seed 6 vs Seed 11

Twelve teams: four byes

A 12-team bracket fills 16 slots, so the top four seeds get byes and seeds 5 to 12 play four first-round games. It is the shape of many high school playoffs and of the old 12-team NFL playoff format with a wild-card round: earning a top-four seed is worth a week of rest.

  • Single elimination: 11 games over four rounds.
  • Double elimination: 22 or 23 games, usually spread over two days.
  • Pools instead: three pools of four, then the three pool winners and the best second-place team into a 4-team bracket.

Seed the byes carefully: in a league, the top four records; in an open tournament, a random draw or last year’s results.

How to make a bracket with 12 teams

  1. Rank the teams 1 to 12 (by record, rating or a random draw).
  2. Give the top 4 seeds a bye into round 2.
  3. Pair the rest so the strongest meets the weakest: 8 vs 9, 5 vs 12, 7 vs 10, 6 vs 11.
  4. Advance each winner along the bracket until one team is left: 11 games in total.

Double elimination: 22 games, or 23 if the final needs a reset.

How long does a 12-team tournament take?

With 30-minute games, a single elimination tournament takes about 5 h 30 min on one court, 3 h 00 min on two courts and 2 h 00 min on four courts. Double elimination roughly doubles those times.
