6-2 Volleyball Rotation Sheet & Diagrams

In a 6-2 two setters stand opposite each other and the one in the back row sets, so the team always has three hitters in the front row. When a setter rotates to the front, she becomes a right-side hitter. Type your starters below to get a printable 6-2 rotation sheet.

The six 6-2 rotations

Positions are listed from left to right as seen from your own back line, with the net in front of you. After every side-out, players rotate one zone clockwise and the player moving to zone 1 serves.

Rotation Front row (4 · 3 · 2) Back row (5 · 6 · 1) Server Setter
1 S2 · MB1 · OH1 OH2 · MB2 · S1 S1 S1 (zone 1, back row)
2 OH2 · S2 · MB1 MB2 · S1 · OH1 OH1 S1 (zone 6, back row)
3 MB2 · OH2 · S2 S1 · OH1 · MB1 MB1 S1 (zone 5, back row)
4 S1 · MB2 · OH2 OH1 · MB1 · S2 S2 S2 (zone 1, back row)
5 OH1 · S1 · MB2 MB1 · S2 · OH2 OH2 S2 (zone 6, back row)
6 MB1 · OH1 · S1 S2 · OH2 · MB2 MB2 S2 (zone 5, back row)

How the 6-2 works

The 6-2 is popular in high school and club teams that have two good setters but no single setter strong enough to play all the way around. Setter 1 sets in rotations 1–3 (zones 1, 6, 5) and setter 2 in rotations 4–6. Many coaches sub a hitter in for the setter who rotates to the front row and back out when she returns to zone 1.

  • Pros: three front-row attackers in every rotation and two setters sharing the load.
  • Cons: two setting styles to adjust to, and it often uses more substitutions.

Libero and substitutions

Most teams use a libero to replace the middle blockers in the back row. Enter the libero in the tool and the sheet shows her in zones 5 and 6 instead of the middle; the middle stays on to serve when she rotates to zone 1, the common choice in youth and high school play. Check your league for libero serving rules.
