10-team bracket: first round matchups
A 10-team bracket fills a 16-slot draw, so 6 teams skip round 1. Byes go to the top seeds: seed 1, seed 2, seed 3, seed 4, seed 5, seed 6. Round 1 has 2 games:
| Game | Matchup |
|---|---|
| 1 | Seed 8 vs Seed 9 |
| 2 | Seed 7 vs Seed 10 |
Ten teams: byes or play-in games
A 10-team bracket uses 16 slots, which means six byes: only seeds 7 to 10 play in round one, in two play-in games. The top six seeds go straight to the quarterfinals. That is a common shape for league playoffs where most teams qualify.
- Play-in round: 7 vs 10 and 8 vs 9, often scheduled on a separate day or as the first games of the event.
- Single elimination: 9 games in total over four rounds.
- Alternative: two pools of five with a 5-team round robin each, then the top two of each pool into a 4-team bracket. Every team plays at least four games.
Double elimination with ten teams is 18 or 19 games; with three or four courts it fits in a long day.

How to make a bracket with 10 teams
- Rank the teams 1 to 10 (by record, rating or a random draw).
- Give the top 6 seeds a bye into round 2.
- Pair the rest so the strongest meets the weakest: 8 vs 9, 7 vs 10.
- Advance each winner along the bracket until one team is left: 9 games in total.
Double elimination: 18 games, or 19 if the final needs a reset.
How long does a 10-team tournament take?
With 30-minute games, a single elimination tournament takes about 4 h 30 min on one court, 2 h 30 min on two courts and 2 h 00 min on four courts. Double elimination roughly doubles those times.
