How to run a cornhole tournament
- Choose the format. Blind draw (partners drawn at random) or bring your own partner, and single or double elimination. Double elimination is the standard for most cornhole tournaments: nobody goes home after one bad game.
- Set the game rules. The usual game is played to 21 with cancellation scoring: a bag in the hole is 3 points, a bag on the board is 1, and only the difference between the two teams counts each inning. Decide before the first toss whether finals are one game or best of three.
- Count your boards. Each pair of boards runs one game at a time. A game typically takes 10 to 20 minutes, so 16 teams in double elimination (30 or 31 games) need about two to three hours on four sets of boards.
- Enter the teams and seed them. Type the team names, or press Shuffle for a random draw. Byes go to the top seeds automatically.
- Call games by number. Every game has a number: “Game 9 on boards 2”. Losers see right away where they play next in the losers bracket.
Cornhole tournament fundraisers
Cornhole is one of the easiest fundraisers to run for a school, team or charity: low equipment cost, all ages can play and a 16 or 32-team bracket fills an afternoon. A few tips:
- Charge per team, cap the field at a bracket size (16, 24 or 32 teams) and open a waiting list.
- Run double elimination so every team gets at least two games for its entry fee.
- Save the bracket online and put the live link on a QR code at the check-in table. Players check their next game instead of crowding the organizer.
- Print one copy of the bracket as a backup in case the Wi-Fi fails.
