Who plays 5v5?

5v5 is the classic format for indoor soccer, futsal-style leagues, adult pickup and many small-sided rec programs. Four field players plus a goalkeeper means everyone defends and everyone attacks.

Field size: Indoor and small-sided 5v5 fields vary a lot, from basketball-court size to roughly 30–40 yards long. Futsal courts are about 40 x 20 meters. Always check your league’s own rules.

The best 5v5 formations

Formations count the field players from the back to the front. The goalkeeper is not part of the numbers, so every 5v5 formation adds up to 4. Choose one in the lineup maker above to load it.

Formation Shape
2-2 The box. Two defenders, two attackers. Simple, balanced and the easiest shape to teach.
1-2-1 The diamond. One defender, two wide players and a pivot up top. Great for passing triangles.
2-1-1 Two defenders, one midfielder and a striker. A safe choice if you are protecting a lead.
3-1 Three defenders and one striker. Very defensive; useful against a much stronger team.
1-1-2 One defender, one midfielder and two forwards. All-out attack when you need a goal.

Coaching tips for 5v5

  • Rotate positions every game: in 5v5 every player touches the ball constantly, which makes it the best format to learn all positions.
  • In a 2-2, the two defenders should split wide when your keeper has the ball, so there is always a short pass on.
  • Substitutions are usually rolling (on the fly), so list the bench in the order players go on.
